A Summer in '69 - Dee Davidson Dosch Summary

A Summer in '69 is the true story of three college coeds who took a summer vacation in Europe and discovered more than just a travelogue. --- Dee Davidson and two of her girlfriends worked and hitchhiked their way through Western Europe in 1969. She kept a diary of their adventures and wrote about how three naive young women from the Midwest tried to take the world by storm. Their inauspicious start as maids in West Germany and waitresses in Switzerland, led them to travels in a dozen countries that were often fun, educational, exciting and sometimes "unfortunate." --- Ultimately, this coming-of-age memoir is also a wonderful journey for three young women that is as unforgettable for them as it will be for readers. "Our limited budgets never got in the way of our extravagant appetites for seeing and doing as much as we could possibly do in the short amount of time we had."

Summer of '69 - Todd Strasser Summary

Drawing from his teenage years, Todd Strasser’s novel revisits a tumultuous era and takes readers on a psychedelically tinged trip of a lifetime. With his girlfriend, Robin, away in Canada, eighteen-year-old Lucas Baker’s only plans for the summer are to mellow out with his friends, smoke weed, drop a tab or two, and head out in his microbus for a three-day happening called the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. But life veers dramatically off track when he suddenly finds himself in danger of being drafted and sent to fight in Vietnam. If that isn’t heavy enough, there’s also the free-loving (and undeniably alluring) Tinsley, who seems determined to test Lucas’s resolve to stay faithful to Robin; a frighteningly bad trip at a Led Zeppelin concert; a run-in with an angry motorcycle gang; parents who appear headed for a divorce; and a friend on the front lines in ’Nam who’s in mortal danger of not making it back. As the pressures grow, it’s not long before Lucas finds himself knocked so far down, it’s starting to look like up to him. When tuning in, turning on, and dropping out is no longer enough, what else is there?

A Summer in '68 - Dee Davidson Dosch Summary

Fifty years ago, America spent a year that changed the world, in what was described as a nation “out of control” during the very divisive Vietnam War, with protest and tragedy on the home front between the generations as the young revolted against their elders and authority. During this tumultuous time in the history of our country, I was trying to learn some “self-awareness,” while living away from home for the first time. My story takes you on an adventurous journey of fun, recreation, and excitement in the Colorado Mountains, where I became a young adult while learning about life on my own. This true story took place in A Summer in ’68, when I spent my three-month college break working as a hotel maid at the Estes Park Chalet in beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park. At age 18, I had the opportunity to enjoy a working vacation, learning about myself with approximately fifty other college students doing the same thing. For those who couldn’t be there, come along as we go back in time to work and play in this Rocky Mountain High resort town.

Woodstock - Wilco Robertson Summary

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock festival with this in-depth retelling of those famous three days of peace, love, and music—overflowing with images and behind-the-scenes information, you'll be fully immersed in the '60s vibe. Half a million fans, described as a "swarm of hippies," flowed non-stop into Yasgur's Farm, Bethel, New York, over the weekend of August 15–18, 1969, to watch 32 legendary music acts, including Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. With all the roads around Bethel gridlocked, helicopters ferried in performers who couldn't reach the venue any other way. Rolling Stone magazine said the Woodstock festival was a moment that changed history, but some festival-goers, soaked by rain, wallowing in muddy fields, and without enough bathroom facilities, described it as total chaos. Electrical problems and ankle-deep water on stage caused havoc with the schedule and a thunderstorm suspended performances on Sunday afternoon. So it was 9 a.m. on Monday morning by the time the star of the show, Jimi Hendrix, appeared, and many people were already heading home. Despite all the criticism, the festival is regarded as a defining moment of the 1960s. Some superlative musicians gave unsurpassed performances captured forever in the Woodstock movie. Many performed songs expressing opposition to the Vietnam War—a sentiment shared by the vast majority of the audience—and, 50 years later, the term "Woodstock Generation" is still used to describe the anti-war youth counterculture of the 1960s.

Ernie Banks - Phil Rogers Summary

Respected by his baseball peers, beloved by Chicago fans and teammates, Ernie Banks did everything there was to do in the game he loved. Everything, that is, except play in a World Series. How and why that experience eluded him during one season of particular promise—1969—is a key storyline of this fresh look at one of baseball's legendary players. Banks, who had picked cotton outside Dallas as a youth, ascended from a barnstorming semipro team to the major leagues after Kansas City Monarchs manager Buck O'Neil placed him with the Cubs. During his time in Chicago, Banks won two MVPs and received an education far better than the one he received in the segregated schools he'd attended, gaining important life skills while playing the game he was born to play.

The Love Machine - Jacqueline Susann Summary

The spectacular bestseller from the author of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. In a time when steak, vodka, and Benzedrine were the three main staples of a healthy diet, when high-powered executives called each other “baby” and movie stars wore wigs to bed, network tycoons had a name for the TV set: they called it “the love machine.” But to supermodel Amanda, socialite Judith and journalist Maggie, “the love machine” meant something else: Robin Stone, “a TV-network titan around whom women flutter like so many moths…The novel deals with his rise and fall as he makes the international sex scene (orgying in London, transvestiting in Hamburg), drinks unlimited quantities and checks out the latest Nielsens.”—Newsweek “I READ IT IN ONE GREEDY GULP, ENJOYING EVERY MINUTE.”—Liz Smith “[Susann’s] pulp poetry resonates to this day. WITH HER FORMULA OF SEX, DRUGS, AND SHOW BUSINESS, Susann didn’t so much capture the tenor of her times as she did predict the Zeitgeist of ours.”—Detour

These are stories of love, hope, and recovery by courageous men and women whose paths are destined to cross.KISSED BY AN ANGEL - A plane crash brought them together. Will their memories and fears tear them apart? A pilot who had been shot down in the jungle makes it home and finds a new career as a Blue Angel. His best friend was not so lucky. Did the pilot's brush with death make him feel invincible...or crush him with survivor's guilt?PHANTOM ANGEL - Amnesia took away his past. Can she help him find a future? A man is discovered living as a prisoner of a Vietnam family, deep in the jungle. Amnesia had taken away his memories and had kept him from trying to escape. Can he adapt to life back in the U.S. after losing not just the last 20 years, but also his very identity?ANGEL OF MERCY - She nursed him back to health and they fell in love. But she choose another man to marry. Twenty years ago, an Army nurse made a difficult choice between the man she truly loved and the man who needed her to survive. Now that she is reunited with her past, can she fix a broken heart and heal wounds that are too deep to be seen? Each of the 2,700,000 Americans who fought in the Vietnam War had their own unique experiences and each one's story is different. 10% of that generation went to Vietnam, but 100% were affected. Over 58,000 Americans died or went missing during the Vietnam War. The rest came home to an ungrateful nation. Some had visible injuries, but almost all suffered deep emotional wounds. The lucky ones had friends and families that helped get them through. It took love and patience and the ability to move forward, one step at a time. Regardless of whether or not, Vietnam was a justifiable cause, these warriors deserve our respect and gratitude. Their stories need to be told...and we need to listen, then give them a big hug.
