The Aramaic and Palestinian Targums

The Aramaic and Palestinian Targums Pdf/ePub eBook

The Aramaic and Palestinian Targums - Zen Garcia Summary

Targum meaning translation references the various language transliterations of the original Hebrew Torah, which were commissioned created by Temple elders. The Aramaic and Palestinian versions printed here are acknowledged to be the oldest and most widely used renderings of the ancient language translations of the original Hebrew Torah. Though they are accepted to date back to at least the first century CE, I believe them to be half a millennia older as they first came into being to accommodate the Israelites assimilation of Aramaic when exiled to Babylon in 597 BCE. It was during the 70 years of that diaspora that Aramaic became the predominant colloquial language and accepted vernacular of use by the Hebraic peoples. During this 70 years of assimilation, the Israelite's use of Hebrew as lexicon dwindled from being the primary dialect of everyday conversation, to being one of mostly scholastic application utilized intellectually by the priestly class.

Love's Knowledge

Love's Knowledge Pdf/ePub eBook

Love's Knowledge - Martha C. Nussbaum Summary

This volume brings together Nussbaum's published papers on the relationship between literature and philosophy, especially moral philosophy. The papers, many of them previously inaccessible to non-specialist readers, deal with such fundamental issues as the relationship between style and content in the exploration of ethical issues; the nature of ethical attention and ethical knowledge and their relationship to written forms and styles; and the role of the emotions in deliberation and self-knowledge. Nussbaum investigates and defends a conception of ethical understanding which involves emotional as well as intellectual activity, and which gives a certain type of priority to the perception of particular people and situations rather than to abstract rules. She argues that this ethical conception cannot be completely and appropriately stated without turning to forms of writing usually considered literary rather than philosophical. It is consequently necessary to broaden our conception of moral philosophy in order to include these forms. Featuring two new essays and revised versions of several previously published essays, this collection attempts to articulate the relationship, within such a broader ethical inquiry, between literary and more abstractly theoretical elements.

The Nixon Tapes

The Nixon Tapes Pdf/ePub eBook

The Nixon Tapes - Douglas Brinkley,Luke A. Nichter Summary

An enhanced edition of this “fascinating” collection of White House transcripts, including audio clips of some of the most newsworthy conversations (San Francisco Chronicle). This “treasure trove” of transcripts documents two years of Richard Nixon’s presidency and takes you directly inside the White House, through the famous—and infamous—Nixon White House tapes that reveal for the first time the president uncensored, unfiltered, and in his own words (TheBoston Globe). President Nixon’s voice-activated taping system captured every word spoken in the Oval Office, Cabinet Room, other key locations in the White House, and at Camp David—3,700 hours of recordings between 1971 and 1973. Yet less than five percent of those conversations have ever been transcribed and published. Now, thanks to historian Luke Nichter’s massive effort to digitize and transcribe the tapes, the world can finally read an unprecedented account of one of the most important and controversial presidencies in US history. This volume of The Nixon Tapes offers a selection of fascinating scenes from the period in which Nixon opened relations with China, negotiated the SALT I arms agreement with the Soviet Union, and won a landslide reelection victory. All the while, the growing shadow of Watergate and Nixon’s political downfall crept ever closer. The Nixon Tapes provides a never-before-seen glimpse into a flawed president’s hubris, paranoia, and political genius—“essential for students of the era and fascinating for those who lived it” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

Broken to Be Blessed - Louise Beaubrun-Macaluso, Ph.D. Summary

This book is an account of the power of believing in a higher power in the most horrific moments and experiencing tangible results. At the age of nineteen, my world came crashing down after a fatal house fire, which tested me in every way imaginable. The heart-wrenching details of the aftermath is narrated in my story of hardships, survival and divinely orchestrated redemption. I went from being a healthy nineteen-year-old to becoming physically disabled with severe burns. The sufferings (physical and emotional) were monumental. Had anyone told me I would experience what I went through, I would have brushed it off. Not because I felt invincible, but rather I did not imagine I could endure what I have endured. It was an arduous learning experience, which has shaped who I am today. I learned a secret that enabled me to beat the odds and succeed, in spite of the enormous adversities I encountered. I wrote this book to share what I’ve learned with those who might be going through some rough patches in life.

Broken to Forgive...When Other's Don't! - Mrs. Marshell Forte Summary

How do you go on when life throws you a Hard Curve? When people mistreat you for no apparent reason and intentionally lie on you. When your children are doing things that are not godly, (they end up going to jail and you bail them out, time after time and they never tell you thank you!!). When a spouse leaves you, or when you are paying child support to a custodial parent who won’t let you see your children because he/she don’t want you to be a part of the child’s life, however, they want your money. What do you do when your siblings turn on you and no longer want to be a part of your life, or your family won’t help you when you are on your last drop of milk for your small children? What do you do? Do you give up? Do you throw in the towel? Do you just reevaluate your life and ask to yourself, “Okay what did I do wrong,” “Where in the world did this come from,” or “Why is this happening to me, even though I didn’t do anything wrong?” I am writing this book for everyone who has been through what I am about to share with you. I have had my share of bitterness and hatred in my heart because of what others have done to me. It almost led me to un-forgiveness, to the point it almost destroyed me. However, in the Name of Jesus, I overcame!! Thank You JESUS! As you thumb through, and meditate on the pages of this book, I pray that this scripture passage is a resounding echo in your spirit. It brought me through some of the most difficult journeys in my life. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 states......

Custom Broken for Good - Mohammed Awal Summary

This novel lays bare the customs and conditions most young girls face in traditional African society south of the Sahara, while in transition from adolescence to womanhood. The priority of parents is for marriage, which produces pressure on both mother and daughter. In this story, Amina, the mother of Sadia, faces the odds of traditional settings to meet the expected standard in marriage. Dankantata is the rebellious suitor to Sadia, and against wisdom and logic, is a hard-core traditionalist. He will not bow down for a minute against his ego, even when it is in his own self-interest to comply with the wishes of his fiancée. The situation eventually leads him to court, with the ensuing case exposing the existing traditions represented by the Imams, clerics, and priests, as well as the cultural norms and state laws. The debate is well crafted and so interesting that it draws in readers with its depiction of marriage in another culture.

Morning and Evening Meditations from the Word of God

Morning and Evening Meditations from the Word of God Pdf/ePub eBook

Morning and Evening Meditations from the Word of God - Michael J. Akers Summary

There are many devotional books available containing brief, daily inspirations that benefit all who read them. This book is different in two respects. The first is obvious: it contains two readings per day—732 in all. The second, more important difference is that the author wanted to do more than offer inspiration; this would make this book no different than so many others. The messages in the book are study sketches in that the content is not only inspirational, but also educational, challenging, and encouraging. Most of these writings were based on author Michael J. Akers’s teaching of adult Bible studies for more than thirty years and learning what really brought adults to want to deepen their knowledge and application of the Word of God.
