Computers have changed since 1981, when The Soul of a New Machine first examined the culture of the computer revolution. What has not changed is the feverish pace of the high-tech industry, the go-for-broke approach to business that has caused so many computer companies to win big (or go belly up), and the cult of pursuing mind-bending technological innovations. The Soul of a New Machine is an essential chapter in the history of the machine that revolutionized the world in the twentieth century..

Frankenstein - Mary Shelley Summary

Determined to make his mark on Science, young student Victor Frankenstein fabricates a creature out of old body parts. His dreams are crushed, however, when he realizes he has created a monster. He runs to the streets, horrified, but when he returns the monster is gone. In time, their paths will cross again, at the price of several innocent lives. Mary Shelley famously started writing ‘Frankenstein’ (1818) for a contest when she was on a rainy holiday with other writers in Lord Byron’s villa in Switzerland. Two years later at the age of 20 she had it published. Since the novel's publication, the name "Frankenstein" has often mistakenly been used to refer to the monster itself, who is, in fact, nameless. Mary Shelley (1797-1851) was an English author, best known for her classic novel ‘Frankenstein’ (1818). She got the idea for the novel at the age of eighteen when she was on holiday in Switzerland with Lord Byron and John William Polidori..

The Pulpit Commentary, Volume 6 - Spence-Jones, Henry Summary

The Pulpit Commentary was first published between 1880 and 1919 and is a highly respected work written by conservative, trustworthy men. Containing over 22,000 pages and 95,000 entries, it is one of the largest and best-selling homiletic commentary sets of all time. It was directed by editors Joseph Exell and Henry Donald Maurice Spence-Jones and utilized more than 100 authors over a 30-year span. When reading this commentary, it is not difficult to see why it has remained a favorite amongst pastors for more than 100 years. There are three key elements which set this apart from its contemporaries, the first being that it gives an exposition, or verse-by-verse, annotation of each verse in the Bible. The second element is that it explores the framework of the text, the homiletics. Finally, it supplies the homilies with multiple model sermons from various authors. Also included is a translation as well as historical and geographical information. The Evangelical Magazine and Missionary Chronicle declared, “This commentary bids fair to take a conspicuous place among the ever-multiplying aids to the study of the Holy Scriptures. It will revive the great work of Lange, and will far exceed the Speaker's Commentary in the bulk and fullness of its material. The peculiarity of the Pulpit Commentary is that it offers special assistance to the preacher: first by giving him a critical and exegetical exposition of the text of Scripture, and then providing him with succinct and helpful directions as to the preachable aspects of the chapter and paragraph already explained." The print edition of this set typically retails for more than $1,000 making the current offered price a very good bargain. Due to its size, it has been broken up into nine separate volumes: Volume 1 Genesis to Joshua Volume 2 Judges to 2 Kings Volume 3 1 Chronicles to Job Volume 4 Psalms to Song of Songs Volume 5 Isaiah to Daniel Volume 6 Hosea to Malachi Volume 7 Matthew to John Volume 8 Act to Philippians Volume 9 Colossians to Revelation The footnotes have been placed in line with the text with each footnote number enclosed in red brackets (i.e.: []) and the text in green. There is also a linked table of contents at the beginning of each volume for ease of navigation. Key Features * Over 22,000 pages with more than 95,000 entries * One of the largest and exhaustive commentary sets of its kind * Contributions from over 100 authors * Expositions—with thorough verse-by-verse commentary of each verse of the Bible * Homiletics—with the framework or overall look of the text * Homilies—four to six sample sermons from various authors * Detailed information on Biblical customs * Historical and geographical information * Translations of key Hebrew and Greek words All 23 Volumes of the printed version are included in these nine volumes. 1. Illustrations of Political Economy - Harriet Martineau Summary

Between 1832 and 1834, Harriet Martineau published a series of 24 short stories meant to illustrate the social and political problems arising from England's free-market economy: overpopulation, strife between workers and factory owners, the hardships of working-class life, and more. Though considered politically extreme by some, the series was wildly successful with readers, and went on to inform the later fiction of socially conscious authors including Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell. It was, we see now, a banner moment in this history of Victorian literature, when politics began to inform fiction. Martineau's writings-often difficult to find in print and here presented in beautiful new editions-are essential reading for students of the 19th-century English novel.Volume II of *Illustrations of Political Economy* features the tales: "Demerara" "Ella of Garveloch" "Weal and Woe in Garveloch"Pioneering English writer and feminist HARRIET MARTINEAU (1802-1876) has been called the first female sociologist and the first female journalist in England. She is also the author of *Society in America* (1837) and *How to Observe Morals and Manners* (1838)..

The Eagle's Way - Dr. Peter Johnston Summary

In the Eagle’s Way: The Importance of Love in Healthcare, the author, a general practitioner, looks back at the changes he has seen over fifty years of study and practice of medicine. Remarkable advances in medicine and surgery have been accompanied by the growth of alternative medicine. He sees the emergence of holistic/integrative medicine as an important development in the evolution of healthcare. In this guide, he explores the principles and philosophies of alternative medicine and its complementary relationship with traditional medicine. The underlying principle of orthodox medicine is fighting disease; in contrast, the underlying principle of alternative medicine is embracing disease, an approach consistent with the new paradigm of unity. Both principles are varied yet powerful. He believes that maintenance of scientific standards dictates that most alternative therapies will remain outside the parameters of orthodox medicine but will be complementary to it. Conventional medicine is intellectual, sensory, head-based, and extraverted in its approach, whereas alternative medicine, especially the new psychotherapies, tends to be intuitive, heartbased, and introverted. The latter tends to go with the flow rather than have set standards of treatment. Practitioners of holistic and integrative medicine using both systems are often viewed as the healers of the future. While both systems can offer help to the patient, the most powerful force in healing remains unconditional love in the form of nonjudgmental respect, care, trust, and compassion. Dr. Johnston presents this as the central core of holistic and integrative medicine in The Eagle’s Way..
