Hardness of Heart/hardness of Life - Larry Stephen Milner Summary

Infanticide is one of the most common, yet least understood of all human crimes. Although academic articles document isolated aspects of this problem, a single, unified analysis of infanticide has not been completed until now. In Hardness of Heart/Hardness of Life, Larry Milner provides the first exhaustive survey of infanticide, drawing on historical data from around the world. He then uses this survey as a basis for investigating why infanticide has been present in every form of human society throughout history. Both comprehensive and compelling, this important study will intrigue students of human psychology, social welfare, and child abuse, and will promote further research on this alarmingly overlooked atrocity.

Stress and Heart Disease - R. E. Beamish,Pawan K. Singal,Naranjan S. Dhalla Summary

It has been known or suspected for centuries that there is an association between mind and emotions and the occurrence of heart disease apd sudden death. During the past fifty years this relationship has become identified with the concept of Stress, a notion developed and popularized by Hans Selye. In recent years there has been an upward surge of interest in stress by scientists in several disciplines and by the general public. Although, books, journal articles, seminars and media programs devoted to stress now abound, the definition, manifestations, mechanisms, and management of stress remain uncertain and controversial. In an attempt to clarify the situation an International Symposium on Stress and Heart Disease was held in Winnipeg, Canada, June 26-29, 1984, and the proceedings form the basis of this book and its companion volume "Patho genesis of Stress-Induced Heart Disease". Although most species which have ever existed are now extinct through countless millenia, the human species has successfully adapted to changing conditions ("stressors") such as ice ages, predators and parasites, wars, famine and plague, and now it is coping with rapidly changing social, economic and political circumstances. Such adaptation occurs at all levels of life- at the molecular level within the cell, at the level of the whole cell, in the groups of cells as organs, in the entire organism or individual, and in some cases, in the society in which the individual lives.

You, the People - Vanessa B. Beasley Summary

New in paperback As we ask anew in these troubled times what it means to be an American, You, the People provides perspective by casting its eye over the answers given by past U.S. presidents in their addresses to the public. Who is an American, and who is not? And yet, as Vanessa Beasley demonstrates in this eloquent exploration of a century of presidential speeches, the questions are not new. Since the Founders first identified the nation as “we, the people,” the faces and accents of U.S. citizens have changed dramatically due to immigration and other constitutive changes. U.S. presidents have often spoken as if there were one monolithic American people. Here Beasley traces rhetorical constructions of American national identity in presidents’ inaugural addresses and state of the union messages from 1885 through 2000. She argues convincingly that while the demographics of the voting citizenry changed rapidly during this period, presidential definitions of American national identity did not. Chief executives have consistently employed a rhetoric of American nationalism that is simultaneously inclusive and exclusive; Beasley examines both the genius and the limitations of this language.

COLLECTED POEMS OF W.B. YEATS - William Butler Yeats Summary

The Collected Poems of W. B. Yeats includes all of the poems authorized by Yeats for inclusion in his standard canon. Breathtaking in range, it encompasses the entire arc of his career, from luminous reworkings of ancient Irish myths and legends to passionate meditations on the demands and rewards of youth and old age, from exquisite, ocasionally whimsical songs of love, nature, and art to somber and angry poems of life in a nation torn by war and uprising. In observing the development of rich and recurring images and themes over the course of his body of work, we can trace the quest of this century's greatest poet to unite intellect and artistry in a single magnificent vision. Revised and corrected, this edition includes Yeats's own notes on his poetry, complemented by explanatory notes from esteemed Yeats scholar Richard J. Finneran. The Collected Poems of W. B. Yeats is the most comprehensive edition of one of the world's most beloved poets available.

The Odyssey of Homer - Homer Summary

Translator name not noted above: Andrew Lang. Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume XXII features a translation by Irish scholar SAMUEL HENRY BUTCHER (1850-1910) and Scottish academic ANDREW LANG (1844-1912) of the epic 8th-century BC Greek adventure The Odyssey, attributed to the poet Homer but originally told in oral form. The foundational text not merely of modern literature but of all of Western civilization, it is the story of the nine-year journey of the soldier Odysseus as he returns home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Nearly three thousand years after it was first written, it remains as entertaining as it is edifying, and it absolutely required reading for anyone who wishes to be considered truly educated and literate.

Perspectives on Behavioral Inhibition - John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Summary

Behavioral inhibition, often displayed as shyness in children and avoidance in animals, can be observed in the earliest stages of infancy. Recent research indicates that in extreme cases the tendency to either approach or withdraw from uncertain events continues through late childhood and is supported by specific biological mechanisms, suggesting a genetic basis. To effectively study behavioral inhibition, researchers are departing from the essentially experiential and descriptive techniques of traditional psychology and turning to a multidisciplinary approach that integrates psychology, psychiatry, epidemiology, genetics, and ethology. Perspectives in Behavioral Inhibition brings together the most current research of leading scholars in the various disciplines involved.
