In the land of temples: Notes from a South Indian pilgrimage - Michael Steinberg Summary

"The land of temples is South India, the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent. It's been called the last surviving classical civilization, a land where there is room for temples large and small and time for rituals passed down for millennia. In four brief essays and two dozen evocative black-and-white photographs scholar and devotee Michael Steinberg takes readers into the inner sanctuaries of ancient temples and out again into the teeming streets of contemporary Chennai. A big book in a little package, his deeply personal story also sheds light on the enduring importance of a way of life that has its roots in the dawn of civilization itself"--Back cover.

Development and Decline of Fukien Province in the 17th and 18th Centuries - Eduard B. Vermeer Summary

The history of China's Southeast coast has unusual features. For many centuries, overseas trade and migration, internal and external warfare, strong religious beliefs and receptiveness to foreign influences characterized this society of fiercely independent traders, fishermen and mountain farmers. The protracted struggle of Cheng Ch'eng- kung and the Southern Ming against the Ch'ing dynasty precipitated Fukien into a crisis, from which many chose to escape by emigration to the Philippines and Taiwan. Recovery was slow. ; The fourteen Western and Chinese contributors to this study focus on internal economic and social developments, overseas and religious change. From the rich Chinese and European source materials, a picture emerges of great regional diversity.Local interests and values were confronted by the central government's orthodox rule, and Western influences of Jesuits and traders. The Fukienese reaction to them produces fascinating insights into Chinese society, and a truly local history which may qualify our ideas on the Chinese Empire. The Impact of 9-11 on Thailand's Tourism Industry by Focusing on the First-Class Hotel Market in Bangkok - Christian Westbeld Summary

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Sawasdee Khrap welcome to the kingdom of Thailand. A number of valid characterizations such as The Land of Smiles , The Land of Temples and Pagodas and Tropical Vacation Paradise describe Thailand at its best. In addition to these picturesque synonyms, the kingdom gained international recognition through its growing travel and hospitality industry. In 2001 Thailand once again booked the top spot as most preferred tourist destination in South East Asia as well as runner-up position in all of Asia, second only to China. When Muslim extremists hijacked four domestic U.S. flights and cowardly carried out the terrorist attack of 9-11 on the U.S.A., the global travel sector felt the direct impact of the terrorist attacks like no other industry. From one day to the other tourists decided to stay at or close to home and hotel rooms were left vacant. As major employer and source for foreign exchange earnings, Thailand s tourism industry was no exception to the threat. As the brutality and human tragedy of this incident will always be remembered, the following report will focus solely on the implications for the tourism and hospitality industry. In specific, the text will take an in-depth look at the development of the first class hotel market in Bangkok following the September attacks. The report looks at 14 top hotels of Bangkok and their performance from January 2000 to March 2002. Special attention lies on the seven months following the U.S.A. attacks in September 2001, whereas a full year comparison of 2000 and 2001 will also provide valid information. The tourism and hospitality industry is a major economic driving factor not only for Thailand, but also for many other Asian nations. Therefore, the beginning of this report deals with the regional development after the terrorist attacks. This way the reader will get an understanding of the current situation in Asia and the general impact of 9-11. After a general overview of Thailand, the first class hotel market of Bangkok will be analyzed by its occupancy, ADR and RevPar development. These performance related information create the backbone of this report and support further assumptions and findings. For validity reasons, the results are then compared to two independent surveys. The fourth section is made up of the changes in travel patterns, tourism demand and strategies, followed by a comparison of the two best performing individual hotels and their advantages over [...]

The Tutankhamen Code - Malcolm Grant Hutton Summary

“ When Claude Tarba showed off a family heirloom in a crowded Arabian restaurant in Melbourne, that simple act of pride among friends didn’t go unnoticed. It set in motion a journey through the little known high mountain country of The Yemen; then on to the Italianate City of Asmara in the Ancient land of Eritrea and a hi-jacking, which landed him in Western Turkey. Eventually after a number of risky adventures that took him to the far southern reaches of Egypt, he found himself committed to a treasure quest which if proved successful would change the future perception of the human race for the next couple of millennia. Clues uncovered in the Tomb of the God King Tutankhamen entrance our unwitting hero and his new friends, committing them all through something more than curiosity to a trail of intrigue, with villains popping up everywhere, intent on stopping them from achieving their main goal, the installation of Claude as an honorary new Pharaoh. Despite foiling several attempts on their lives, Claude and his companions then have to contend with another scoundrel and his giant of a servant, who have their eyes on the treasure whatever it may turn out to be. The story takes us back into the ancient world of 18th Dynasty Egypt where we meet the legendary King Solomon who with his son and heir, plan and set the stepping stones that may only be discovered and followed by a future generation worthy enough to restore the glory and spiritual beliefs of the Egypt that once was. Not only is the narrative one full of thrills and unusual situations, it is also transports the reader into the colourful life of contemporary and ancient Egypt. The unexpected climax will have everyone thinking, ‘What really did happen thousands of years ago to kick-start civilisation as we know it today?’”
