Show Me the Way to Go Home - Takako Day Summary

In 1995 Takako Day received a plea from a Japanese American who had been forcibly removed from his home and incarcerated during the Pacific War. He asked her to tell the painful story of American citizens who had been labeled “disloyal” by the US government. She interviewed more than ten “disloyal” men and discovered that at heart of their experience was a moral dilemma, buried deep in the Japanese American community: unlike many other English-speaking Japanese Americans, their mother tongue and the language of their education was the “enemy” language, Japanese. It is dedicated to making the untold stories of US citizens — imprisoned but asked to fight for the country that imprisoned them — accessible to readers of English.

The Oberon Anthology of Contemporary Irish Plays: 'This is just this. This isn't real. It’s money.’ - Thomas Conway Summary

HEROIN by Grace Dyas, Trade by Mark O’Halloran, The Art of Swimming by Lynda Radley, Pineapple by Phillip McMahon, I ? Alice ? I by Amy Conroy, The Big Deal edited by Una McKevitt, Oedipus Loves You by Simon Doyle & Gavin Quinn, The Year of Magical Wanking by Neil WatkinsEdited and introduced by Thomas Conway. This anthology comprises eight new plays by Irish playwrights premièred between the years 2006 and 2011. These playwrights ride, however, in no slipstream of the identifiably Irish play. Here, the enterprise of playwriting itself is being re-imagined. Here, above all else, is a commitment to becoming in the theatre. For all that, each play is concerned with what is unfinished business in Ireland. How astonishing, then, that these plays should revolve for the most part around identity and, in particular, sexual identity. How identity comes into play, how we open up the field of play, how we raise into collective experience the exercise of that play – the urgency in the playwriting would appear to lie precisely here. We can read from the historical moment – from a narrative emphasizing an economic bubble and its hangover – into these plays. Or we can take these playwrights at their word and observe lives lived at the contour of identities in the making. It is for us as readers, just as we have as theatre-goers – frequently scandalized, enthralled, shamed, appalled, unburdened, tickled pink – to decide.

Rudolf Pdf/ePub eBook

Rudolf - Marian Pankowski,John Maslen Summary

This novel, set in the 1970s, tells the story of the "author" - a middle-aged Polish professor who lives abroad but who earlier survived the Nazi concentration camps - and Rudolf, an old man. In the 1930s Rudolf, the son of Germans living in Poland, rebelled against the expectations of both his parents and Polish society by leading an openly gay life in Paris. Rudolf and the author meet by chance in Brussels, and the novel unfolds as Rudolf attempts to convince the author - and himself - that his choices were good ones, that his life and the memories he has of it were worth whatever he gave up for them. Told in a highly poetic fashion through the author's stream of consciousness as well as through a triangular correspondence among Rudolf, the author, and the author's mother, Rudolf's story emerges as a tale of subversion and liberation. Echoing Gombrowicz in its exploration of transgressive desire, it will be of great interest not only to those interested in Polish literature but to readers of gay and lesbian literature as well.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - Tennessee Williams Summary

The definitive text of this American classic—reissued with an introduction by Edward Albee (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and A Delicate Balance) and Williams' essay "Person-to-Person." Cat on a Hot Tin Roof first heated up Broadway in 1955 with its gothic American story of brothers vying for their dying father's inheritance amid a whirlwind of sexuality, untethered in the person of Maggie the Cat. The play also daringly showcased the burden of sexuality repressed in the agony of her husband, Brick Pollitt. In spite of the public controversy Cat stirred up, it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Critics Circle Award for that year. Williams, as he so often did with his plays, rewrote Cat on a Hot Tin Roof for many years—the present version was originally produced at the American Shakespeare Festival in 1974 with all the changes that made Williams finally declare the text to be definitive, and was most recently produced on Broadway in the 2003-04 season. This definitive edition also includes Williams' essay "Person-to-Person," Williams' notes on the various endings, and a short chronology of the author's life. One of America's greatest living playwrights, as well as a friend and colleague of Williams, Edward Albee has written a concise introduction to the play from a playwright's perspective, examining the candor, sensuality, power, and impact of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof then and now.

The Tree of Lost Dreams - Frank Sousa Summary

The Tree of Lost Dreams takes Johnny DaSilva and his Big Tree buddies from youths who lived out their fantasies of heroism high on the towering limbs of the Big Tree to the real world. While trying and failing to enter WW II because of their youth, they were greeted with the Korean War. Johnnys words Now we have our own war were received with some standing tall on their high limb while others deciding to instead abandon the heights and place their two feet squarely on the ground. Johnny, Righty, Scoff, Rhesus and others bought into Johnnys words, If we dont fight them there, we will fight them here. The two young girls that were in love with Johnny, wealthy and popular Yelena, and poor and abused Bernadette, are now women. It took little time for the Big Tree gang to learn the great distance between the lofty fresh air of their beloved Tree to the lowly face in the muck, nearly impossible to breathe gasps of battlefield blood and barf. Johnny suffers the epitome of the wounds of the lower depths and the different directions it spirals him, Yelena and Bernadette into. Hopefully you have read the Tree of Young Dreamers, Frank Sousas first novel of the Tree Trilogy. The third, the Tree of New Roots is underway.
