Proof of Murder - Lauren Elliott Summary

Bookshop owner Addie Greyborne must solve a locked-room murder in a supposedly haunted mansion to recover a priceless Sherlock Holmes original . . . The seaside New England town of Greyborne Harbor is home to many grand estates, including the Queen Anne Victorian Addie inherited from her great aunt. Now one of those mansions is holding an estate sale, which is just what the bookshop owner needs to replenish her supply of rare editions—even if the house is rumored to be haunted. Assisting an overwhelmed insurance appraiser with the inventory, Addie discovers an 1887 magazine containing Arthur Conan Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet, which she estimates to be worth over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. But when Addie later finds the appraiser dead in the estate's private library, with the door bolted from the inside, and the priceless edition missing, it's a mystery worthy of the Great Detective himself. She's certain the death and the robbery are connected—but who, other than a ghost who can walk through walls, could have gotten in to do the deed? It's up to Addie to find the key to the crime—before she's the next one cornered by a killer . . . Visit us at www.kensingtonbooks.com

Evidence Of Murder - Samuel Roen Summary

Missing On Tuesday, June 10, 1997, in Orlando, Florida, Carla Ann Larson, 30, left work for a lunch break. She never returned. Happily married and mother of an infant daughter, Carla Ann had no reason to desert her family. Initially suspicious of husband James Larson's numb reaction, detectives were shocked to learn that his sister had been murdered by a serial killer in 1990. Manhunt A massive search soon uncovered the beaten and strangled body of Carla Ann Larson. The burnt-out hulk of her Ford Explorer was found in the palmetto backwoods. Witnesses reported seeing an unknown man driving the vehicle after her disappearance. Most Wanted After the crime was featured on television's America's Most Wanted, a tip led to the estranged wife of career criminal John Huggins. Angel Huggins had never known the joy of a loving marriage, but she and Carla Ann Larson had one thing in common: first-hand experience with John Huggins's brutal wrath. Angel lived to tell about it, and what she had to say led to her husband's arrest. To Catch A Killer Nothing would deter investigators from bringing him to justice, but ex-con Huggins wasn't about to make their job any easier. His refusal to cooperate prompted detectives to set a new plan into motion. Could their ingenuity nail the cold-blooded murderer of a woman who was guilty only of being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Includes Sixteen Pages Of Shocking Photos

Victorian Murders - Arthur Griffiths Summary

Victorian Murders contains all the most shocking cases of murder from Victorian true-crime classic Mysteries of Police & Crime. The author, Major Arthur Griffiths (1838–1908), was Inspector of Her Majesty’s Prisons and deputy governor of Millbank and Wormwood Scrubs, and was most famous for his association with the Whitechapel case. He knew many of the greatest detectives of the day, and, as a result, was the first to describe in print the three men – Kosminski, Ostrog and Druitt – that the police suspected of being ‘Jack the Ripper’. This fascinating volume also includes every other case of note in the annals of Victorian crime. From Elizabeth Brownrigg, who whipped her domestic into an early grave, to the horrific tale of Henry Wainwright, who attempted to transport the dismembered body of his lover across London, it is not for the faint of heart. Richly illustrated, including early sketches by Arthur Rackham, and filled with countless tales of poisoners, sadists, serial killers and cases that have never been solved, this is a book that no true-crime fan should be without.

Too Many Murders - Colleen McCullough Summary

Master of suspense and bestselling author Colleen McCullough returns with this novel starring Carmine Delmonico, set in the late sixties in a sleepy New England college town—now in paperback. • Loyal fans: McCullough has an excellent track record across genres, and this intricately plotted page-turner represents some of her best work. The second installment in a three-book crime series, Too Many Murders features the newly married Carmine and Desdemona of On, Off, along with a new cast of richly drawn characters. • Rich, historical detail: McCullough paints a portrait of a quintessential New England university town during the 1960s. From the stately buildings of the campus to the town’s greasy diner, from gender politics to Cold War tensions, McCullough brings to life a period that many of her readers remember. • Murder in a small town: Twelve murders have taken place on one day. All are different, and no victim is connected to any of the others. At the same time, Delmonico finds himself pitted against the mysterious Ulysses, a spy giving armaments secrets to the Russians. Are the murders and espionage somehow linked?

Murder and the Reasonable Man - Cynthia Lee Summary

A man murders his wife after she has admitted her infidelity; another man kills an openly gay teammate after receiving a massage; a third man, white, goes for a jog in a “bad” neighborhood, carrying a pistol, and shoots an African American teenager who had his hands in his pockets. When brought before the criminal justice system, all three men argue that they should be found “not guilty”; the first two use the defense of provocation, while the third argues he used his gun in self-defense. Drawing upon these and similar cases, Cynthia Lee shows how two well-established, traditional criminal law defenses—the doctrines of provocation and self-defense—enable majority-culture defendants to justify their acts of violence. While the reasonableness requirement, inherent in both defenses, is designed to allow community input and provide greater flexibility in legal decision-making, the requirement also allows majority-culture defendants to rely on dominant social norms, such as masculinity, heterosexuality, and race (i.e., racial stereotypes), to bolster their claims of reasonableness. At the same time, Lee examines other cases that demonstrate that the reasonableness requirement tends to exclude the perspectives of minorities, such as heterosexual women, gays and lesbians, and persons of color. Murder and the Reasonable Man not only shows how largely invisible social norms and beliefs influence the outcomes of certain criminal cases, but goes further, suggesting three tentative legal reforms to address problems of bias and undue leniency. Ultimately, Lee cautions that the true solution lies in a change in social attitudes.
