Modern Feminist Thought - Imelda Whelehan Summary

From the historical roots of second-wave feminism to current debates about feminist theory and politics. This introduction to Anglo-American feminist thought provides a critical and panoramic survey of dominant trends in feminism since 1968. Feminism is too often considered a monolithic movement, consisting of an enormous range of women and ideologies, with both similar and different perspectives and approaches. The book is divided into two parts, the first of which takes a close look at the most influential strands of feminism: liberal feminism, Marxist/socialist feminism, radical feminism, lesbian feminism, and black feminism. In later chapters, Whelehan ties these complexities of, and conflicts within, feminism. The role and relationship of men to feminism, and feminism's often thorny relationship to postmodernism, are also the subject of chapter length treatment. Concluding with a provocative discussion of the much-heralded advent of post-feminism and the rise of the new feminist superstars such as Camille Paglia, Naomi Wolf, Susan Faludi, and Katie Roiphe, Modern Feminist thought is an ideal text for students and a book no feminist teacher or activist should be without.

Africa's Second Wave of Freedom - Lyn S. Graybill,Kenneth W. Thompson Summary

Africa's Second Wave of Freedom represents the work of scholars who share a concern with the development of civil society in Africa. The first third of the book deals theoretically with the issues of democracy and stability in Africa. In particular, the contributors analyze the inadequacy of the United States' response to African problems (such as environmental decay, spiraling debt, and health epidemics) that do not respect national boundaries; the fragility of democracy in Africa and the danger of reversion to dictatorships; and the barriers to constitutional democracy in sub-Saharan Africa. The remainder of the book consists of case studies of various aspects of civil society from Mozambique, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

The Second Wave - Philip Scranton Summary

Though it had helped define the New South era, the first wave of regional industrialization had clearly lost momentum even before the Great Depression. These nine original case studies look at how World War II and its aftermath transformed the economy, culture, and politics of the South. From perspectives grounded in geography, law, history, sociology, and economics, several contributors look at southern industrial sectors old and new: aircraft and defense, cotton textiles, timber and pulp, carpeting, oil refining and petrochemicals, and automobiles. One essay challenges the perception that southern industrial growth was spurred by a disproportionate share of federal investment during and after the war. In covering the variety of technological, managerial, and spatial transitions brought about by the South's "second wave" of industrialization, the case studies also identify a set of themes crucial to understanding regional dynamics: investment and development; workforce training; planning, cost-containment, and environmental concerns; equal employment opportunities; rural-to-urban shifts and the decay of local economies entrepreneurism; and coordination of supply, service, and manufacturing processes. From boardroom to factory floor, the variety of perspectives in The Second Wave will significantly widen our understanding of the dramatic reshaping of the region in the decades after 1940.

The Second Wave - Abigail Sarmac,Michelle Arévalo-Carpenter,Diana Duran,Alejandra Peña,Vanessa Peña Summary

Impact investing is growing in Latin America. Seventy-eight impact investment firms reported investing into Latin America between 1997-20161. Nearly 80% of these impact investors made their first investment in the region after 2007, with 14-15 new entrants every two years, representing an important first wave of impact investment in the Latin America region, mostly into large market countries. Impact investors in the region have been most active over the past decade in Brazil, Mexico, and, more recently, Colombia. However, Latin America & the Caribbean is a region of small market countries. Twenty of the twenty-four countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean have populations of 31M people or less. So, what can be done to promote a second wave of impact investing in these markets? This is one question this report aims to answer.

Queering the Second Wave - Lisa Downing,Lara Cox Summary

Queering the Second Wave will consider the works and ideas of feminists including Monique Wittig, Shulamith Firestone, Andrea Dworkin, Marilyn Frye, Donna Haraway, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Cherríe Moraga as precursors of queer theoretical writings by names such as Judith Butler, José Esteban Muñoz, Lee Edelman, Paola Bacchetta, and Judith Jack Halberstam. While acknowledging some of the problems and blindspots of second-wave politics and writing, we nevertheless seek to challenge the assumption that second-wave feminism is politically outdated or invalid. Instead, we imagine cross-generational and cross-discursive dialogues, and trace a genealogy of influence between the second-wave past and the queer present, while also speculating, in some cases, on previously unimagined queer-feminist futures. Key Features * Contains key contributors in the field of feminism and queer theory. * Two of the leading names discussed in the book - Moraga and Halberstam are also, themselves, contributors to Queering the Second Wave. * Reignites debates about second-wave feminism.

The Second Wave of Law and Economics - Megan Richardson,Gillian Kereldena Hadfield Summary

How best can the analyses and insights of economics inform legal theory and "improve" legal decision-making? The contribution of the first wave of law and economics scholars was marked by dogmatic adherence to the free market ideals of the Chicago school. Today, the second wave places greater emphasis on empirical data and accepts a much wider range of non-economic values - an approach which offers promise of an objective and balanced reception of law and economics by the courts. This book demonstrates the richness and value of the second wave. The contributors include judges from the High Court of Australia and the Court of Appeal, New Zealand and academics from the Universities of Toronto, Melbourne and Cambridge.
