The Black Marble Griffon - E. W. Farnsworth Summary

The Black Marble Griffon & Other Disturbing Tales features short stories of good old fashioned, blood-curdling horror. Two prize winning shorts are included in this volume, The Wasps, and Helen Screaming. Some of the other short stories include: The Cold Ghost Tentacles, which posits a solution to the mystery of the Loch Ness Monster; The Zombie Tontine, wherein an insurance investigator becomes involved in a zombie plot in Haiti; and The Creature from the Black Stone Reservoir, about a Grendel-like creature that lurks in the natural aquifer under Phoenix. Many of Farnsworth's horror stories stem from real¿and horrific¿historical events, some from the darkest, most secret imaginable truths. These include Curse of the Ship Burial, about the ancient Egyptians' worldwide naval presence and Comes the Silence, which posits a rabid right-wing takeover of America. Some stories in this volume are visceral, as The Sand Man's Henchman, Body Wagon, and Ridge Riders. Yet the horror is just as often cerebral, except in hindsight when his stories' spectral ideas return to haunt the imagination. Reminiscent of the wilder visions of A. A. Merritt is The Brass Gong, and E. A. Poe might have enjoyed The Visitor. Still E. W. Farnsworth's The Wakening and Night of the Sailor Moon take the reader where no horror aficionado has ever gone before. The reader can delve into this collection and roam in any direction at will. The sheer variety of perspectives offers much for every mood, and we hope you enjoy your discovery of the writings of E.W. Farnsworth.

Black Marbles and Bright Energy - Thomas V. Moore Summary

BLACK MARBLES and BRIGHT ENERGY**Dark Matter and Dark Energy Explained The science of cosmology - why our universe is what it is - abounds with unanswered questions.* What is Dark Matter?* What is Dark Energy?* What is the structure of a Black Hole?* Why is the rate of expansion of the universe increasing? This book provides answers to these questions and many others by proposing an original approach called Black Marble Theory. It is a simple, elegant, and non-mathematical idea that can be easily understood by a non-technical reader. The fundamental proposition is simply that matter can exist in a different state than the ordinary matter that we can see in the universe. It is called "Black Matter." It is produced when all of the space is compressed out of Ordinary Matter by extreme gravity. If there is enough Ordinary Matter to start with, the Black Matter will form a solid sphere called a "Black Marble." Black Marbles form the center of Black Holes. From this basic idea, the theory follows logical steps that provide clear and plausible explanations of the most profound mysteries that confront Physics today. It explains the structure of the Black Hole, the formation of galaxies, and the Big Bang itself! The theory also provides a surprisingly simple explanation of the source and fuel of the Dark Energy that propels the expansion of the universe. In an hour of easy reading, it will become clear...Why our universe is just what it appears to be.

The Terrane Puzzle - Robert B. Blodgett,George D. Stanley Summary

"Displaced or tectonostratigraphic terranes comprise a huge portion of real estate in the North American Cordillera. Terranes are discrete, fault-bound blocks of regional extent, with rocks and fossils that differ to a great extent from those of adjacent blocks. The allochthonous nature of most terranes, relative to adjacent craton, is well established. When mapped, they resemble a collage of mixed rock types, tectonic styles, metamorphism, and volcanic origins--each part resembling the pieces of a puzzle. Terrane studies remain integral to understanding the geological evolution of western North America. Since the initiation of the concept summarized in 1979 by the late David L. Jones, the significance of fossils and stratigraphy has been key to solving the puzzle. Chapters of this book written by experts in their field, provide a sense of the diversity of approaches in paleontology and stratigraphy. Contributions span geologic time from the Precambrian (Vendian) to Cretaceous and address over 20 Cordilleran terranes."--Publisher's website.

Echoes in the Darkness - Joseph Wambaugh Summary

On June 25, 1989, the naked corpse of schoolteacher Susan Reinert was found wedged into her hatchback car in a hotel parking lot near Philadelphia's "Main Line." Her two children had vanished. The Main Line Murder Case burst upon the headlines--and wasn't resolved for seven years. Now, master crime writer Joseph Wambaugh reconstructs the case from its roots, recounting the details, drama, players and pawns in this bizarre crime that shocked the nation and tore apart a respectable suburban town. The massive FBI and state police investigation ultimately centered on two men. Dr. Jay C. Smith--By day he was principal of Upper Merion High School where Susan Reinert taught. At night he was a sadist who indulged in porno, drugs, and weapons. William Bradfield--He was a bearded and charismatic English teacher and classics scholar, but his real genius was for juggling women--three at a time. One of those women was Susan Reinert. How these two men are connected, how the brilliant murder was carried off, and how the investigators closed this astounding case makes for Wambaugh's most compelling book yet.

The Intuitive Sources of Probabilistic Thinking in Children - H. Fischbein Summary

About a year ago I promised my friend Fischbein a preface to his book of which I knew the French manuscript. Now with the printer's proofs under my eyes I like the book even better than I did then, because of, and influenced by, new experiences in the meantime, and fresh thoughts that crossed my mind. Have I been influenced by what I remembered from the manuscript? If so, it must have happened unconsciously. But of course, what struck me in this work a year ago, struck a responsive chord in my own mind. In the past, mathematics teaching theory has strongly been influenced by a view on mathematics as a heap of concepts, and on learning mathematics as concepts attainment. Mathematics teaching practice has been jeopardised by this theoretical approach, which in its most dangerous form expresses itself as a radical atomism. To concepts attainment Fischbein opposes acquisition of intuitions. In my own publications I avoided the word "intuition" because of the variety of its meanings across languages. For some time I have used the term "constitution of mathematical objects", which I think means the same as Fischbein's "acquisition of intuitions" - indeed as I view it, constituting a mental object precedes its conceptualising, and under this viewpoint I tried to observe mathematical activities of young children.
