A Twisted Shade of Green - Eloise Epps MacKinnon Summary

Love Conquers All! Kali Mathias knew that, being cursed with a beauty like hers, it was less likely for a man’s eye to want a second glimpse of her. That is, not until the day her eye rested upon Mr. Glen Monroe—the one man who would not easily be had. A woman needed an exclusive invitation to taste the passion that awaited them inside Glen’s empire. It was a colorful world of green where a taste of love portrayed revenge, deceit, and lust and where a beautiful woman could partake of such pleasures. Glen and Kali were both undergoing a broken heart at the hands of a twisted shade of green when they first met. Glen got Kali, and Kali got Glen. Kali thought she would never be acceptable. She was not slim enough, not tall enough, or pretty enough to please a man. On the other hand, Glen knew he was more than enough; he was handsome and breathtaking at the same time. He was more than enough for any woman to behold. Regardless of that discord, they both confusingly questioned their faith in God and opted for a doltish lifestyle. Hers based on a lustful appetite; his based on revenge. Glen’s faith was almost null to the point where he believed that all he had was enough to get him through life. And Kali, on the other hand, had the notion God just wasn’t working fast enough—not quicker than her cash. Glen and Kali were two lost people trying to survive in a world minus a heavenly net—God! They lost their way, but God never forgot them. He defeated the hands of Satan by refuting a pair of wrongful eyes from an unjust sight of Kali in the arms of another man. God embodied Kali with a heart of compassion to forgive Glen, flaws and all. Instead, God turned one date between two total opposite hearts into one that required each other to be alive in the midst of any storm. Also, God taught both Glen and Kali a lesson. He taught her to realize that not everything had a price tag, not real love! And he taught him that even love can conquer the grips of a heart’s revenge!

The Shade of New Leaves - Manfred O. Hinz,Helgard K. Patemann Summary

"Omudile muua ohapo; epangelo liua ohamba". Freely translated, this proverb of the Ovakwanyama of northern Namibia means: "New leaves produce a good shade; the laws of a king are always as good as new". The proverb paints a picture of wisdom to express the dialectical relationship between continuity and change in customary law. Since royal orders are supposed not to change from one king to the next, they are always as good as new, reads the explanatory note to the proverb by the anthropologist Loeb, who recorded the proverb. Traditional authority is like a tree standing on its roots, rooted in the tradition created by the ancestors of the ruler and the community. These roots remain firm, stable and unchanged, not so the concrete manifestation of authority that changes and responds to changes of the environment. This makes that new leaves are produced by the rooted tree. The new leaves are new and old. They are old, because in structure, colour and their capacity to protect by giving shade, they are more or less like the leaves of last year and the year before; they are new because they react to the challenge of seasons. The Shade of New Leaves emerged out of an international conference on the living reality of customary law and traditional governance held in Windhoek in 2004. The conference was organised by the Centre for Applied Social Sciences and the Human Rights and Documentation Centre, both affiliated to the Faculty of Law of the University of Namibia, in co-operation with the Law Departments of the Universities of Bremen, Germany, and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. The contributions to this book are grouped into six parts: Part 1: Legal pluralism, traditional governance and the challenge of the democratic constitutional order * Part 2: Traditional administration of justice revisited * Part 3: Ascertaining customary law: prerequisite of good governance in traditional authority * Part 4: Legal philosophy, African philosophy and African jurisprudence * Part 5: Research, training and teaching of customary law * Part 6: Afterthoughts

A Thousand Shades of Green - Pieter Winsemius,Ulrich Guntram Summary

'What does it mean for the environment?' is a strategic corollary of almost any significant business decision today, and companies must take seriously their responsibilities to regulators, customers, employees and the wider society. A Thousand Shades of Green is aimed at business leaders in need of a clear understanding of the key corporate environmental challenges and the insight and vision to meet them - imperatives such as engaging stakeholders and developing partnerships, understanding the policy-making process, forming corporate responses and drafting environmental management strategies - with the promise of genuine competitive advantage for their companies. Drawing on their extensive consultancy experience with some of the most progressive companies around the world, the authors examine why and how businesses must confront the rapidly developing agenda set by environmental constraints and social and regulatory pressure. They identify the corporate environmental challenge with that of change management and advocate a recognition that there is no single strategy or endgame applicable to all companies - there are a thousand shades of green. Only by pursuing thorough, reflective, consistent, competitive and proactive strategies will businesses be able to avoid being embroiled in costly and complex reactive approaches.

Motherlove in Shades of Black - Gloria Thomas Pillow Summary

This book closely examines the mother figure in six works by African American women at various times in American history: Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Pauline Hopkins’s Contending Forces, Nella Larsen’s Passing, Gwendolyn Brooks’s Maud Martha, Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, and Toni Morrison’s Beloved. It studies how the mother in each novel negotiates the ragged, hostile landscape of a prohibitive environment to love, protect, and raise her children. Delving far deeper than surface explanations, it is informed by psychological analysis to reveal the forces that create the unique tensions of the African American mother’s life, her inspired strategies for survival, and the character of the nurturing she gives her children.

Nourishing the Essence of Life - Eva Wong Summary

The teachings of Taoism, China's great wisdom tradition, apply to every aspect of life, from the physical to the spiritual—and include instruction on everything from lifestyle (a life of simplicity and moderation is best) to the work of inner alchemy that is said to lead to longevity and immortality. Here, Eva Wong presents and explains three classic texts on understanding the Tao in the macrocosm of the universe and the microcosm of the body that provide an excellent overview of the three traditional levels of the Taoist teachings—Outer, Inner, and Secret. The Outer teachings are concerned with understanding the Tao as manifested in nature and society. They are easily accessible to the layperson and consist of the Taoist philosophy of nature and humanity, advice on daily living, and a brief introduction to the beginning stages of Taoist meditation. The Inner teachings familiarize the practitioner with the energetic structure of the human body and introduce methods of stilling the mind and cultivating internal energy for health and longevity. The Secret teachings describe the highest level of internal-alchemical transformations within the body and mind for attaining immortality.

Beyond the Shades of Gray - Dean Bailey Summary

Beyond the Shades of Gray is based upon Christian fundamentals and beliefs. It was not written to convince anyone that homosexuality is "wrong." It was written primarily to assist those who are inwardly convinced that their own homosexuality is "wrong for them." Over 10 years in the personal journey of its writing, the author uses practical applications of Bible scripture throughout the book, without religiosity. Scripture is used to confront various aspects of this very controversial subject—head-on. Therefore, the author makes no apologies for the portions of this book that may seem to be more graphic in nature than your average “Christian” book. Homosexuality is a subject that absolutely needs to be dealt with truthfully, and without religious avoidance of difficult topics. If you are a person who has ever had doubts or questions about your sexual orientation or behavior, then what the author has written here is for you. The work contains a wealth of practical, biblical principles, and also includes information for women. But the book is otherwise a work written by a man, for other men who also desire freedom and heterosexual restoration from their own unwanted homosexual behaviors. "What we long for is a deep and heartfelt sense of brotherhood," and the author proposes that the real issues behind homosexual behaviors are not about sex! God's love (agáp love) always has both a balance of truth, and a responsibility that goes along with it. In this book, I take the same agáp love approach toward homosexuality, as Jesus did in the Book of John, Chapter 8, with the woman caught in the sin of adultery. Jesus showed great love and compassion toward the woman, both in the way that he dealt with the hypocritical crowd that had brought her to him, and in the way he spoke to her as he sent her on her way, and told her, "Go, and sin no more." - Dean Bailey

Deeper Shades of Purple - Stacey M. Floyd-Thomas Summary

Womanist approaches to the study of religion and society have contributed much to our understanding of Black religious life, activism, and women's liberation. Deeper Shades of Purple explores the achievements of this movement over the past two decades and evaluates some of the leading voices and different perspectives within this burgeoning field. Deeper Shades of Purple brings together a who's who of scholars in the study of Black women and religion who view their scholarship through a womanist critical lens. The contributors revisit Alice Walker's definition of womanism for its viability for the approaches to discourses in religion of Black women scholars. Whereas Walker has defined what it means to be womanist, these contributors define what it means to practice womanism, and illuminate how womanism has been used as a vantage point for the theoretical orientations and methodological approaches of Black women scholar-activists. Contributors: Karen Baker-Fletcher, Katie G. Cannon, M. Shawn Copeland, Kelly Brown Douglas, Carol B. Duncan, Stacey M. Floyd-Thomas, Rachel Elizabeth Harding, Rosemarie Freeney Harding, Melanie L.
