The Longest Winter - Alex Kershaw Summary

The epic story of the vastly outnumbered platoon that stopped Germany's leading assault in the Ardennes forest and prevented Hitler's most fearsome tanks from overtaking American positions On the morning of December 16, 1944, eighteen men of the Intelligence and Reconnaissance platoon attached to the 99th Infantry Division found themselves directly in the path of the main thrust of Hitler's massive Ardennes offensive. Despite being vastly outnumbered, they were told to hold their position "at all costs." Throughout the day, the platoon repulsed three large German assaults in a fierce day-long battle, killing hundreds of German soldiers. Only when they had run out of ammunition did they surrender to the enemy. But their long winter was just beginning. As POWs, the platoon experienced an ordeal far worse than combat-surviving in wretched German POW camps. Yet miraculously the men of the platoon survived--all of them--and returned home after the war. More than thirty years later, when President Carter recognized the platoon's "extraordinary heroism" and the U.S. Army approved combat medals for all eighteen men, they became America's most decorated platoon of World War II. With the same vivid and dramatic prose that made The Bedford Boys a national bestseller, Alex Kershaw brings to life the story of these little-known heroes--an epic tale of courage, duty, and survival in World War II and one of the most inspiring episodes in American history. The Longest Winter is an intensely human story about young men who find themselves in frightening wartime situations, who fight back instinctively, survive stoically, and live heroically..

Prairie Fires - Caroline Fraser Summary

WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW'S 10 BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR The first comprehensive historical biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the beloved author of the Little House on the Prairie books Millions of readers of Little House on the Prairie believe they know Laura Ingalls—the pioneer girl who survived blizzards and near-starvation on the Great Plains, and the woman who wrote the famous autobiographical books. But the true saga of her life has never been fully told. Now, drawing on unpublished manuscripts, letters, diaries, and land and financial records, Caroline Fraser—the editor of the Library of America edition of the Little House series—masterfully fills in the gaps in Wilder’s biography. Revealing the grown-up story behind the most influential childhood epic of pioneer life, she also chronicles Wilder's tumultuous relationship with her journalist daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, setting the record straight regarding charges of ghostwriting that have swirled around the books. The Little House books, for all the hardships they describe, are paeans to the pioneer spirit, portraying it as triumphant against all odds. But Wilder’s real life was harder and grittier than that, a story of relentless struggle, rootlessness, and poverty. It was only in her sixties, after losing nearly everything in the Great Depression, that she turned to children’s books, recasting her hardscrabble childhood as a celebratory vision of homesteading—and achieving fame and fortune in the process, in one of the most astonishing rags-to-riches episodes in American letters. Spanning nearly a century of epochal change, from the Indian Wars to the Dust Bowl, Wilder’s dramatic life provides a unique perspective on American history and our national mythology of self-reliance. With fresh insights and new discoveries, Prairie Fires reveals the complex woman whose classic stories grip us to this day..

All Against All - Paul Jankowski Summary

A narrative history, cinematic in scope, of a process that was taking shape in the winter of 1933 as domestic passions around the world colluded to drive governments towards a war few of them wanted and none of them could control. All Against All is the story of the season our world changed from postwar to prewar again. It is a book about the power of bad ideas—exploring why, during a single winter, between November 1932 and April 1933, so much went so wrong. Historian Paul Jankowski reveals that it was collective mentalities and popular beliefs that drove this crucial period that sent nations on the path to war, as much as any rational calculus called “national interest.” Over these six months, collective delusions filled the air. Whether in liberal or authoritarian regimes, mass participation and the crowd mentality ascended. Hitler came to power; Japan invaded Jehol and left the League of Nations; Mussolini looked towards Africa; Roosevelt was elected; France changed governments three times; and the victors of 1918 fell out acrimoniously over war debts, arms, currency, tariffs, and Germany. New hopes flickered but not for long: a world economic conference was planned, only to collapse when the US went its own way. All Against All reconstructs a series of seemingly disparate happenings whose connections can only be appraised in retrospect. As he weaves together the stories of the influences that conspired to lead the world to war, Jankowski offers a cautionary tale relevant for western democracies today. The rising threat from dictatorial regimes and the ideological challenge presented by communism and fascism gave the 1930s a unique face, just as global environmental and demographic crises are coloring our own. While we do not know for certain where these crises will take us, we do know that those of the 1930s culminated in the Second World War..

Gender Roles in Laura Ingalls Wilder ́s "The Long Winter" - Nermin Bastug Summary

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 11, University of Marburg, course: The Frontier in American History, language: English, abstract: Men and women had definitive roles and tasks at the American Frontier. The image of gender roles at the end of the 19th century is depicted in Laura Ingalls Wilder`s novel The Long Winter. It tells us the story of the Ingalls family`s hard time during blizzards during a hard and long winter. Besides Charles` and Almanzo`s efforts, the “strong, able-bodied [female] pioneers [...] contribute considerably to the survival of their families” (McGinnis). The Long Winter “with its domestic ethos and its clearcut models of gender” (Romines 1997, 146) is a concrete example to illustrate the gender roles at the American Frontier. In this work the roles of frontier men and women are exemplified by Caroline`s, Charles` and Almanzo`s tasks and lives. Moreover, the girls Laura, Carrie and Mary Ingalls are being prepared to take over the gender roles adopted by their parents..

Dangers come from humans as they encounter claim jumping murderers and unpaid workers causing near riot. Meanwhile, Mary must come to grips with her new life as a blind person. “One of the phenomenal achievements in modern literature for children, a genuine chronicle of American life and of family life at their equal best. Through these books Laura Ingalls of the 1870’s and ‘80’s has stepped from the pages of the past into the flesh and blood reality of a chosen friend. . . . If our country can become great in humility, and can work earnestly to solve its own problems at the same time that it carries its share of world responsibilities, it will be through vision of our children, their integrity and idealism, gained in homes like the home in the ‘Little House’ books.” —The Horn Book “Any boy or girl who has access to all the books in the series will be the richer for their firsthand record of pioneer life in the opening West and for their warm-hearted human values.” —The New Yorker “The finest firsthand picture of American pioneer life ever written for children.” —San Francisco Chronicle “It is a matter of great satisfaction and a cause for gratitude that we can turn to such a group of stories as those of Mrs. Wilder. They ring true in every particular. Their authentic background, sensitive characterization, their fine integrity and spirit of sturdy independence, make them an invaluable addition to our list of genuine American stories.” —The New York Times.

Long Winter - Rachel Ember Summary

A complicated history divides them, but when they find themselves in close quarters while the snow falls, the heat between them builds slowly, and burns hot. It’s been a long, cold winter at Riverside Ranch, where Robbie has lived alone since his brothers moved away. Alone, that is, except for his three devious cats, four saddle horses, and the forty-eight mustangs that roam the ranch. Robbie is preparing for yet another snowfall when he gets the last call he expected—a plea to pick up Lance Taylor from the county jail. Lance wasn’t just his little brother’s best friend, he was a part of the family. Then, one night, after Lance asked Robbie for something Robbie couldn’t give, he ran away and never came back. Lance was sixteen and heartbroken when he left his middle-of-nowhere hometown. Six years later, he’s at rock bottom with nowhere else to go, and no one to turn to but Robbie, the man Lance has been inconveniently in love with for most of his life.

When Robbie offers Lance a place to stay, Lance expects a guest bedroom and awkward silences. Instead, he finds himself sharing Robbie’s one-room hayloft apartment and its single bed, while realizing that the old flame he carries for Robbie might not be so hopeless, after all. Long Winter is the first book in the Wild Ones series and has a happy-for-now ending. Robbie and Lance’s story continues in Signs of Spring, to be released March 12, 2021. Praise for Long Winter "What a beautifully written story this is! There is an effortless elegance to Rachel Ember’s prose that I found myself sinking blissfully into, like a relaxing Sunday drive—or horseback ride, as it were. Robbie and Lucas are perfectly imperfect, their past complicated, and their desire a slow burn destined to ignite. They breathed from the page, and the setting was so real I felt like I could go to the ranch right now and see all of them. I will definitely be reading more from this author!" - L.C. Chase, author of Pickup Men "Long Winter is a gorgeously detailed, realistic contemporary drama full of angst and longing and set in the backdrop of a rural Nebraskan town in winter. A self-styled city boy, Lance, returns to his home town after the fallout from an abusive relationship with no one else to turn to other than his childhood crush, modern day cowboy/rancher, Robbie. Hot enough to warm your cold winter's night and threaded through with tender and sometimes painful childhood memories. Recommended for people who like realistic, character-driven stories with a heavy emotional current running throughout." - KP Maxwell, author of The Problem Client "An enchanting and heartwarming novel, with strong themes of family, love, and a long overdue second chance for two flawed but utterly lovable men. The setting was beautifully evocative, from the winter scenes, to life on the ranch, to the wild horses that watch over it all. I sank totally into the read and can’t wait for the next book from this author!" - Stella Shaw, author of Dante.
