The Tourist as a Metaphor of the Social World - Graham Dann Summary

This book contains a selection of papers from the prestigious Research Committee on International Tourism presented at the World Congress of the International Sociological Association, Brisbane, Australia, July 2002. It provides a sociological and anthropological critique of existing tourism theory as well as some directions for its future development and research. While much of the present understanding of the tourist and tourism is grounded in metaphor (e.g. tourism as a sacred journey, tourism as play, the tourist as a child, etc.) such analogies need to be linked to transformations in tourism generating and receiving societies. Hence the focus on the tourist and everyday life, socio-psychological dimensions of the tourist experience, the tourist and conflicting expectations, and the tourist in a changing world.

The Tourist Gaze - John Urry Summary

Tourism is both a key aspect of modern life and a substantial industry; yet its importance has been generally unrecognized by academic commentators. In this book John Urry sets out to construct a distinctive sociology of tourism. He demonstrates that tourism deserves attention not only in its own right but as a central element of broad cultural changes in contemporary society. are systematic ways of seeing what we as tourists look at and that these ways of seeing can be described and explained. John Urry develops this analysis through various levels - historical, economic, social, cultural and visual. its development as a global industry. The economic impact and complex social relations involved in international tourism are explored. Changing patterns of tourism are shown to be connected to the broader cultural changes of postmodernism and related to the role of the service and middle classes. The author argues that we are seeing a universalization of the tourist gaze and increasing confusion between tourism as it is conventionally understood and a host of other social practices - shopping, sport, culture, hobbies, leisure and education.

The salt is removed from the vats twice or three times in the course of the summer. Salina is a mile and a half north of Syracuse. The first salt spring was discovered at this place by the Indians, from the circumstance of its being visited by deer and other animals. The Oswego Canal commences at this place, the surplus water of which is used for the purpose of forcing (by a powerful hydraulian) the salt water 85 feet up the hill into a large reservoir: It is forced up at the rate of 300 gallons per minute, whence it is conveyed by logs to the factories in the neighbourhood, which amount to 175 within a circuit of 7 miles. The'springs and works all belong to the State, to which the manufacturers pay imposts of 63 cents per barrel of 5 bushels, which are applied, according to the Constitution of the State, towards discharging the Canal debt. The Oswego Canal extends from Onondaga iake to lake Ontario, at Oswego. It includes 20 miles of the Oswego river. The whole distance is 38 miles. Geddes is a small village, 2 miles west of Syracuse. A number of valuable salt springs have been discovered at this place very recently. The manufacturing establishments are within a few rods of the canal. The Tourist - Olen Steinhauer Summary
