The Unthinkable - , Summary

Discover how human beings react to danger—and what makes the difference between life and death “Fascinating and useful . . . [shows that] the most important variable in an emergency is your own behavior.”—The New York Times Today, nine out of ten Americans live in places at significant risk of earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, terrorism, or other disasters. Tomorrow, some of us will have to make split-second choices to save ourselves and our families. How will we react? What will it feel like? Will we be heroes or victims? In her quest to answer these questions, award-winning journalist Amanda Ripley traces human responses to some of recent history’s epic disasters, from the explosion of the Mont Blanc munitions ship in 1917–one of the biggest explosions before the invention of the atomic bomb–to the journeys of the 15,000 people who found their way out of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. To understand the science behind the stories, Ripley turns to leading brain scientists, trauma psychologists, and other disaster experts. She even has her own brain examined by military researchers and experiences, through realistic simulations, what it might be like to survive a plane crash into the ocean or to escape a raging fire. Ripley comes back with precious wisdom about the surprising humanity of crowds, the elegance of the brain’s fear circuits, and the stunning inadequacy of many of our evolutionary responses. Most unexpectedly, she discovers the brain’s ability to do much, much better–with just a little help..

Thinking the Unthinkable - Charles C. Lemert Summary

In the eloquent style for which he has become famous, Charles Lemert writes of social theory as no one else. Thinking the Unthinkable is offered as text for instruction, yet it defies the prevailing assumption that social theory is a method for clarifying the facts of social life. Lemert shows how social theory began late in the 19th century as a struggle to come to terms with the failure of modern reason to solve the social problems created by the capitalist world-system. Since then, social theory has developed through twists and turns to think and rethink this Unthinkable. Hence the surprising innovations of recent years-postmodern, queer, postcolonial, third-wave feminist, risk theories, among others arising in the wake of globalization. Once again, Lemert has made the difficult clear in a book that students and other readers will treasure and keep..

Kidnap for Ransom - Richard P. Wright Summary

The enormous sums paid for the release of hostages coupled with law enforcement’s inability to stem the tide has made kidnapping for ransom a worldwide plague. The increasing rate of reported incidents from every corner of the globe suggests this plague is growing. Kidnap for Ransom: Resolving the Unthinkable removes the veil of mystery and dispels some of the myths surrounding kidnapping. The book provides security professionals, families, and law enforcement personnel with the modern tools needed to understand and effectively respond to the crime of kidnapping. This volume traces the historical development of kidnapping for ransom and studies the behaviors of perpetrators, victims, and families. The author makes extensive use of case histories, and includes comments and anecdotes from those who have actually suffered at the hands of kidnappers. Based on his vast experience managing these incidents, the author provides an overview of the series of activities that represent the best opportunity for a successful resolution of a kidnap for ransom scenario. This tried and tested methodology for confronting kidnapping situations enables victims, families, and organizations to have a fighting chance. In addition, the book examines how kidnappers operate and describes the methods they use to select, target and abduct their victims. The work also details preventive measures that an individual can take to avoid becoming a victim, and the strategies that one must apply to survive a kidnapping. This is the first book to examine the kidnap for ransom phenomenon and to reveal the process from the moment of the kidnapping until the victim’s safe return. The author’s experience as the principal consultant and manager in the successful resolution of numerous kidnapping and extortion incidents makes this book an invaluable tool for those charged with the responsibility of kidnap prevention, as well as for those law enforcement agents called on to mitigate the potential consequences of an abduction in progress..

A Crack in Creation - Jennifer A. Doudna,Samuel H. Sternberg Summary

BY THE WINNER OF THE 2020 NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize “The future is in our hands as never before, and this book explains the stakes like no other.” — George Lucas “Required reading for every concerned citizen.” — New York Review of Books Not since the atomic bomb has a technology so alarmed its inventors that they warned the world about its use. That is, until 2015, when biologist Jennifer Doudna called for a worldwide moratorium on the use of the gene-editing tool CRISPR—a revolutionary new technology that she helped create—to make heritable changes in human embryos. The cheapest, simplest, most effective way of manipulating DNA ever known, CRISPR may well give us the cure to HIV, genetic diseases, and some cancers. Yet even the tiniest changes to DNA could have myriad, unforeseeable consequences, to say nothing of the ethical and societal repercussions of intentionally mutating embryos to create “better” humans. Writing with fellow researcher Sam Sternberg, Doudna—who has since won the Nobel Prize for her CRISPR research—shares the thrilling story of her discovery and describes the enormous responsibility that comes with the power to rewrite the code of life. “An invaluable account . . . We owe Doudna several times over.” — Guardian.

The Great Derangement - Amitav Ghosh Summary

A “concise and utterly enlightening” look at why we can’t wrap our minds around climate change (Publishers Weekly). Are we deranged? Award-winning essayist and novelist Amitav Ghosh argues that future generations may think so. How else to explain our imaginative failure in the face of global warming? The Great Derangement examines our inability—at the level of literature, history, and politics—to grasp the scale and violence of climate change. The extreme nature of today’s climate events, Ghosh asserts, make them peculiarly resistant to current modes of thinking and imagining. This is particularly true of serious literary fiction: hundred-year storms and freakish tornadoes simply feel too improbable; they are automatically consigned to genres like science fiction. In the writing of history, too, the crisis has sometimes led to gross simplifications, but the carbon economy is a tangled story with many contradictory and counterintuitive elements. Ghosh ends by suggesting that politics, much like literature, has become a matter of personal moral reckoning rather than an arena of collective action, and that limitation comes at great cost. The climate crisis asks us to imagine other forms of human existence—a task to which fiction, Ghosh argues, is the best suited of all cultural forms. His book serves as a great writer’s summons to confront the most urgent task of our time, and “makes the case that climate solutions can’t be left to scientists, technocrats, and politicians” (Los Angeles Review of Books). “Perhaps the most penetrating cultural critic of a new age defined by climate change and the strange, inadequate, and often self-deluding ways we process its transformations in our storytelling.”—New York Magazine “Resistance to the grim realities of climate change is so widespread that the crisis barely figures in literary fiction, notes writer Amitav Ghosh…The solution, he argues, lies in collective action as well as scientific and governmental involvement.”—Nature.

Thinking the Unthinkable - Lydia Dotto Summary

An overwhelming majority of climatologists believe there will be significant changes in climate during the next century. Although the rate and magnitude of this change are uncertain, it could happen very rapidly. In August 1987, a working group of fifty scientists and humanists from Russia, Eastern and Western Europe, the United States, and Canada gathered in Calgary to focus their attention on the impact upon civilization of sudden climate change. One of the more revealing aspects of climate change discussed in Thinking the Unthinkable: Civilization and Rapid Climate Change is that contrary to the popular viewpoint complex societies are more vulnerable to environmental and climate disruption than less “advanced” societies. This work was written to emphasize the gravity of the situation we now face. It should serve to inform not only those concerned with our global environment, but more importantly the policy makers who will be responsible for setting new guidelines and policies aimed at safeguarding our fragile environment..

Predicting the Unthinkable, Anticipating the Impossible - Georgie Anne Geyer Summary

In the 1980s, most Americans scoffed at the idea that the Communist empire could collapse; Georgie Anne Geyer was already outlining that probability. In the 1990s, the world was stunned by wars that raged across post-Yugoslavia; Geyer interviewed top officials and anticipated the conflicts. When 9/11 occurred, she stated, "This was inevitable—the terrorists had already attacked the World Trade Center in 1993 and criminals always return to the scene of the crime." Geyer argues that while the United States was praised everywhere during an era of "indispensable power" as the "greatest power the world has known," it actually had started on the road to decline. It had won the Cold War, but had immediately embarked upon more Vietnam-like small wars of tremendous cost in Iraq and Afghanistan. Across the board, it was no longer paying its way, while its domestic culture was being vulgarized at every turn. This book explains how, when, and where these declines happened. Geyer studies the history of nations and of peoples; observes human nature, particularly as influenced by religion and ideology; and is a close analyst of the acts of men and women when they perceive they have been humiliated by others or by history. She warns Americans and journalists that we must anticipate the changes in the world before they are upon us and that we must employ predictions to strengthen our nation and its principles..

In the event of a Sino-U.S. war, intense conventional counterforce attacks could inflict heavy losses and costs on both sides, so leaders need options to contain and terminate fighting. As it takes steps to reduce the likelihood of war with China, the United States must prepare for one by reducing force vulnerabilities, increasing counter–anti-access and area-denial capabilities, and using economic and international effects to its advantage..

Design for Micro-Utopias - John Wood Summary

Everyone is already painfully aware of our predicament - ecological extinctions, dwindling fossil fuel reserves and economic chaos. The solutions are less obvious, despite the many opportunities that surround us. We have never had more access to resources, knowledge and technology but this is not the problem. What we lack most is creative thinking, fuelled by collective optimism. In a pragmatic world run by careerist experts this is hardly surprising. As voters and consumers we are trained to choose and complain, but not how to envisage what we really, really want. How can we design a better world unless we revive the art of dreaming? For without dreams we are lost. Perhaps it should be the duty of all citizens to imagine alternative futures; in effect, to think more like designers. After all, designers have always been dreamers, and have often found ways to realize their dreams. Design for Micro-Utopias does not advocate a single, monolithic Utopia. Rather, it invites readers to embrace a more pluralized and mercurial version of Thomas More's famous 1516 novel of the same name. It therefore encourages the proliferation of many 'micro-utopias' rather than one 'Utopia'. This requires a less negative, critical and rational approach. Referencing a wide range of philosophical thinking from Aristotle to the present day, western and eastern spiritual ideals, and scientific, biological and systems theory, John Wood offers remedies for our excessively individualistic, mechanistic and disconnected thinking, and asks whether a metadesign approach might bring about a new mode of governance. This is a daring idea. Ultimately, he reminds us that if we believe that we will never be able to design miracles we make it more likely that this is so. The first step is to turn the 'impossible' into the 'thinkable'..

Behind Closed Doors - The Unthinkable Summary

The story takes place in Chicago, Illinois, where the author lived with her four loved ones. She is writing this autobiography about her pains, trials, and pleasures. Her story will deeply explain what her trials and tribulations pulled her through. Living and learning from life, the author has learned to always place God first and to always love yourself and your family. She has learned that when dealing with relationships, you have to be ready to give a person a part of you; and in relationships, sometimes you may lose yourself as a person because you want to be a girlfriend, etc. So may I say this to my readers: just be careful of who you give your heart to because in the end, that person can hurt your heart; so just keep God in your life, stay strong, do the things you need to do to better your life for you and your family, always love yourself, and be blessed..
